During the indigenous ritual of Mariwin, the Matis paint their bodies black with carbon obtained from charcoal, wearing only ferns, grass leaves, and red masks.  The carbon is made by mixing charcoal with water to make a paste that is applied to the body.  When dry, it takes on a blue-black color.  This carbon-based pigment should not be confused with huito, which is also commonly used to paint the body, but is more permanent, lasting several weeks.
