Elderly Machiguenga Matriarch

 
Photograph of an elderly Machigenga matriarch.  In general, the Machigenga Indians society is matriarchal and woman assume the primary role in the family unit.  In particular, elderly females are highly respected and honored for their great knowledge and consequently, have much power in decisions that affect the family or community.
