Imitating animals of the rain forest is a common theme among indigenous people
of the Amazon. Animals and animal spirits are important in both their
society and religion. The Matis do not differentiate between the real and
spiritual worlds and both good and evil animal spirits are thought to permeate
the world, determining success in hunting, health, and good fortune.
