Kană Matis demonstrating how the masks used for the Ceremony of Mariwin are made.  Making ceramics is considered by anthropologists as being a characteristic of more advanced cultures.  In fact the oldest known ceramics in South America come from the Amazon River Basin in Brazil rather than the Andes Mountains or the coastal regions.  The Matis Indians excel at making both functional and ornamental ceramics.  In addition, they make ceramic trumpets that are used as musical instruments in the Mariwin ceremony.
