  Amazonian Indian Chief
 


Txemã, the primary cacique (chief) of the Matis tribe, with face painted red with dye from urucum (Bixa orellana) for the Ceremony of Queixada.  His smile shows the warmth and happiness of the Matis tribe.  The Matis spend much of their time smiling and laughing.  They are truly a happy people.
