Matsés girl demonstrating typical female body painting and  facial painting with red from annatto ("achiote") and black from genipap ("huito").  Traditionally, girls and boys were given permanent tattoos upon reaching adolescence.  Typically, a male relative would be responsible for making the tattoos on both girls and boys.
