The Capybara Ritual is similar to many other Matis rituals in that it involves an animal native to the Amazon Rain Forest.  The Matis tribe practices animism.  Similar to other Amazonian Indians, they believe that animal spirits inhabit plants and animals and consequently, have many taboos and customs with respect to hunting animals.
