Young Matsés (Mayoruna) woman demonstrating facial and body painting. sticks are often inserted in a
piercing of the skin directly under the lower lip and are used as facial ornamentation
by Matsés woman. Note the absence of characteristic Matsés tattoos
which are presently rare among the younger Matsés girls and women. In
addition, the characteristic "lip-stick" (labret) is missing in this younger
woman. Traditionally the Matsés women had large sticks inserted in a
piercing below the lower lip and the length of the stick was much greater in
younger unmarried girls
as compared to older married Matsés women.
