Matsés tribe women often adorn their noses with narrow sticks that are composed of the leaf ribs of palms.  These sticks are meant to imitate cat whiskers.  Hence, the Matsés Indians are commonly known as the "cat people."   The men do not adorn their noses in a similar manner.  Instead they place black splinters of palm wood in piercings above the upper lip.
