This younger Matsés woman is lacking two characteristic facial ornaments that are typical in Matsés women, tattoos and piercings.  Often the lower lip of Matsés tribe women are ornamented with sticks carved from "caña brava shoots."  The sticks are put in a piercing below the lip and the size of the stick varies with age; younger woman of the Matsés tribe use longer sticks.  Other Amazon tribes commonly put wooden sticks below the lower lip.  However, usually the sticks are much smaller and finer.  In addition, the small sticks (labrets) are also used by men.
