These two Native American men demonstrate the use of "achiote" to paint headbands that are made from the leaves of palm trees.  Note the different patterns that are painted on the headbands.  Various geometric patterns are used to  represent the various Matsés clans (snakes, jaguars, peccaries, and worms).  Generally, only males have headbands.  In addition, Matses men wear belts made of palm leaf.  Belts are used on the hips and often on the stomach and chest.
